A Cup of Tea by Katherine Mansfield Creates a Contrast...

1 2 A CUP OF TEA BY KATHERINE MANSFIELD 3 4 5 Comment [LS1]: The title is linked to the central incident in the story and also acts as a linking device between Rosemary and Miss Smith. As Rosemary emerges from the antique shop in the cold, winter weather, she feels she ‘ought to go home and have an extraspecial cup of tea’. Immediately after that Miss Smith appears, begging desperately for something Rosemary has plenty of but which Miss Smith needs to sustain her existence. He would be willing, of course, to keep it for her for ever. The discreet door shut with a click. She was outside on the step, gazing at the winter afternoon. Rain was falling, and with the rain it seemed the dark came too, spinning down like ashes. There was a cold bitter taste in the air, and the new-lighted lamps looked sad. Sad were the lights in the houses opposite. Dimly they burned as if regretting something. And people hurried by, hidden under their hateful umbrellas. Rosemary felt a strange pang. She pressed her muff against her breast; she wished she had the little box, too, to cling to. Of course the car was there. Shed only to cross the pavement. But still she waited. There are moments, horrible moments in life, when one emerges from shelter and looks out, and its awful. One oughtnt to give way to them. One ought to go home and have an extra-special tea. Short Story - 1125 Words

For a kid’s game, there’s sure a shit-ton of killing and death and stuff. Mitch clung to the side of the cliff, wincing at the burn from his virtual muscles, his arms shaking as he heaved a leg up and over the edge. As his palm hit a soft tuft of neon-green grass, he thought about how real it felt. An oasis of organic sensation in an otherwise overclocked world. The cool blades calmed his soul for a whole two seconds before a fresh blast of digital artillery ricocheted off the nearest rock, sending shards flying into the back of his hand, tearing at the flesh as he clung for dear life. I hate this fucking world. Today’s mission had been, on paper, a cut-and-dry exercise compared to what the team had seen over the past few months. The†¦show more content†¦This was no a bag of loot stuck halfway through a tree, or a side mission that couldn’t be completed. No, this bug was a fucking doozy. Mitch’s eager fingers scrambled across the turf, finally reaching the familiar, cold slide of steel. He coaxed the weapon—a shining, glimmering, gold-plated hand cannon—towards him, fighting against its hefty weight, like a puppy pulling at a rope toy. He could feel the heat of battle rising behind him. His only hope of getting out of this mess—a level they’d already tried and failed at six times today—was the comically oversized, gold-tinted weapon now at his fingertips. And Mitch was ready to be done. A fresh laser shot hit him square in the small of the back, causing him to lose his grip, reeling in pain on his side. Goddamn, this cartoon-infested excuse for a game. The game world of ChillChilla had been designed with a Skittles bag full of colors, with every rough edge sanded down just so. Paths led through space worlds ranging from volcanic wastelands to shiny, futuristic space cities to rail racers tracing across the rings of a planet Mitch thought might be roughly based on Saturn, although he had skipped his astronomy classes back in the day. The game featured Karma’s newest cartoon protagonist—a non-player character that would also conveniently serve as the face for an extensive line of digital collectibles, in-gameShow MoreRelatedshort story1018 Words   |  5 Pagesï » ¿Short Stories:  Ã‚  Characteristics †¢Short  - Can usually be read in one sitting. †¢Concise:  Ã‚  Information offered in the story is relevant to the tale being told.  Ã‚  This is unlike a novel, where the story can diverge from the main plot †¢Usually tries to leave behind a  single impression  or effect.  Ã‚  Usually, though not always built around one character, place, idea, or act. †¢Because they are concise, writers depend on the reader bringing  personal experiences  and  prior knowledge  to the story. Paper on Comparing Poems free essay sample

The two poems have similar themes, but different styles. The purposes are not alike in any way, they are both trying to portray different issues and topics. Whitmans poem is very cheerful. I get this impression by the statement singing with open mouths their song of melodious songs. To me, he is expressing the happiness of each worker and is showing the audience that the workers are in good spirits. I also believe his poem is very playful. He makes it clear that the poem is meant to give off good vibes and is showing the workers being content with themselves as well as with their placement in America. Another impression I get by Whitmans poem is that it is meant to be joyous. the reason I believe this is because he continue sly points out that each worker is singing and usually singing is a way of showing joy. the reason I believe this is because he continue sly points out that each worker is singing and usually singing is a way of showing joy. I also believe Whitman is being intimate with his words and with the way he portrays each worker. The statement Each singing what belongs to him or her and no one else, the day that belongs to the day- at night the party of young fellows, robust, friendly†¦ shows the personal connection he is trying to create with each American worker. Hughess tone is very different from Whitmans. Hughes is very earnest in his poem. I feel this way because he is very serious throughout the entire poem and is showing his deep feelings of his opinions on America. I have also gotten the impression that Hughes is very optimistic in his poem. He says I am the young man, full of strength and hope†¦ this is a direct statement saying he believes in positive outcomes and is hopeful. Another feeling I have while reading this poem is he is very serious. He is making it clear that his intention is not to be funny and that he wants his poem to be taken sincerly. I also believe that Hughes is being very nostalgic. He is missing what America once was and is yearning for the past. I believe this due to the fact that he uses the statement Let America be America agin, let it be the dream it use to be. The differences is see between these two poems are their tones. Whitmans poem is very cheerful and is in good spirits, but Hughess poem is very earnest and shows a lot of deep feelings. I also notice that they have set different purposes to their poems. In Whitmans poem I see his purpose being to show the essence and diversity of America. Hughess purpose seems to be to get America to take action and bring back the old ways of America. The similarity I see in the two poems is that they have the same intended audience, which is obviously the people of America. All in all, to me, the two poems are more different than they are similar. I see more differences to the poems themselves, than i do similarities. However, the are both well written poems and are very inspiring to me.
